Built as a naval hospital from 1773, it was the largest hospital in Europe when completed in 1762. The site of 65 acres contains many “listed” buildings, walled and formal gardens and informal parkland.
The proposals involve retention of “list” buildings, demolition of buildings from the 1970s, construction of new buildings and restoration of gardens & parkland. All will contribute to a cohesive order reflecting military order.
A mix of uses includes veterans’ accommodation, retirement dwellings & a community health hub in the main building. Other buildings, new & old, will house care and dementia homes, mixed use offices/workshops, a hotel & conference centre & spa. There will also be a heritage centre, a community building, a coffee house & restaurant, small retail outlets, student’s accommodation, residential apartments and houses. Planning applications will be submitted in 2011.
